Guitar Chords

from: Sophie Beck
To learn how to play acoustic guitar chords you must first learn the chords and notes to be played. If you focus on learning the basics first you will not be overwhelmed with all the cords and notes there are to learn. You will also become aware of all the different songs and types of music that you hear on the radio and CDs today.

The diagram is what the chords are noted on. Guitar tabs and acoustic guitar chords are very much a like, the difference being the lines showing on each string run up and down. The grids are located on the chord diagram, the strings are represented by vertical lines and the frets are represented by horizontal lines. There are dots on the guitar for telling you where to hold the guitar strings and numbers to tell you which fingers to use.

This is how you play a G-major chord; place your middle finger on the sixth string on the third fret, place your index finger on the fifth string on the second fret, and place your ring finger on the first string on the third fret. When you strum you want to be sure the note sounds clear. If it does not sound clear try holding the string a bit harder and moving your finger closer to the fret. Try not to let your fingers touch each other or any other strings.

This is how to play a E-minor chord; place your index finger on the fifth string and on the second fret, put your middle finger on the fourth string and on the second fret. The sound of this strum will be a much darker one. Remember to not let your fingers touch each other.

Other acoustic guitar chords to learn are the A-major, A-minor, C-major and D-major. You should adhere to a daily practice schedule to learn how to play back and forth. It takes time to learn how to do this but you must learn to move your fingers quickly and easily. You will be amazed at how quickly your fingers will just fall into place. Your fingers will build muscle memory and your quicknes will improve as well.
